WINE: A Drink for Mind and Body?
O |
Even though India is still considered to be a whiskey and rum drinking country, wine is changing the scenario here. Between 2010 and 2015, we have seen a double-digit rapid compound annual growth rate of 14%. And it is all due to the rapid urbanization, changing lifestyles, rising disposable income and being the world's youngest popula tion has contributed towards it. Wine is considered is the newest addition to the market, there are almost 65 wineries established in the country.
India has 123,000 acres of land devoted as vineyards, out of which only 1% is for winemaking, which is divided into various units. Some to name as Chateau d’Ori, Chateau Indage Limited, Grover Vineyards Limited, Sula Wine yards, Fratelli Winery, SDU Winery, York Winery etc. And in these wineries, hundreds of brands are being produced every year. Few of the domestic and international brands that we have in India are such as Big Banyan, Vallonne Malbec Reserve, Sula Rasa, Vindiva, Myra, Krsma, Sette, four seasons, Jacob's Creek, Alamos, Beringer, Chateau, Moet, and Chandon.
Major cities such as Kolkata, New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Pune, and Bangalore are the most demanded wine centers in the country. It has been recorded that in per capita basis a person consumes about a teaspoon of wine per year.
The wine has a long presence in the history of the world, it was praised by the poet, priest, historian, artist and almost people from all walks of life. The earliest culture of wine production predates in the year of 4100 B.C. somewhere in Armenia. Even though there are no records on written or modern archeology details of first wine grapevines. It was the wine which was more appreciated to have along with dinner rather than water as it being unreliable. And then it just got more refine with passing years.
We all know that wine is made out of grapes but this is not the table grapes. These have seed on it, which are sweeter, small in size and also have thicker skin than the others. But technically wine can be made out of fruits such as apple, plum, and cranberries. Along with the main ingredient, there are other components which are equally important such as potassium sorbate and potassium metabisulfite, calcium carbonate, sulfur dioxide, sugar, yeast, and water.
The whole process of winemaking takes a year-round to get into that bottle of it. And that's why we always tend to connect the word Vintage with wine; ‘Vint' which means winemaking and ‘Age’ denotes the year it was made. So now whenever you see a vintage label on a wine bottle, it signifies the year that the grapes were picked and was made into wine.
But wait there is something more on that label; it’s the Alcohol by Value % (ABV) on each bottle. Just to let you know, each type of wine have its own standard percentage. Speaking of which in India, wines have 5 -13% of ABV in a standard drink of 100-250ml and a 14-20% of ABV in Fortified wines of a standard drink of 60-90 ml.
In India, the wine category is basically divided into 3 types, which are known as premium wines (or still wines ) which are again divided into red and white wines. Then there is sparkling wine, in which the market is dominated with white wines mostly. Champagne can be another choice in this type. One more type of wine available in the market is the fortified wines, which are not yet made or regarded as quality wines. There is one more that has recently entered the market and that is rosé wines, this is one of the oldest forms of wine
Recently wine becomes more popular due to its health benefits as well, it has been proved that a glass or two is better than not having it all. Why? Well due to the presence of anti-oxidant in red wine, it lowers the incidence of cardiac diseases, type 2 diabetes. But then again it all depends on the small consumption of wine. It is also been said that dry red wine is better than the sweeter version. On more fact about wine is that we have always been said that the older the wine, the better it will be, but if we are looking in the health aspect, it has been suggested that the young wines are more healthy than the old red ones. It is basically due to the high concentration of tannin on it.
The trick to figuring out what you like is by trying a sampling of some of the more popular styles out there. So next time when your friends are over your place, or there is a family gathering and you need something to drink along with that slice of pizza or the yummy chicken tandoori that you have made, there is a wide range of wine that you can choose from.
